I thought that the texting poll we did in class was really cool. I unfortunately was not able to participate since I am not able to send/receive text messages on my cell phone, but it was really neat to see other people trying out this interesting new capability. It seemed fairly reliable compared to the clickers we usually use for other classes. What did all of you think of the in-class exercise we did? Do you wish more classes used that technology?
Hey Allison,
ReplyDeleteYeah I thought the in class activity was pretty cool. I wish they had more classes that used technology in their activities. I believe it makes the class more engaging for everyone. Also, there are many ways to integrate different activities into a platform like that.
I think that the polling site was pretty cool too.
ReplyDeleteIt works great for statistics & polling, but it would not work for taking tests. Unfortunately we can't submit test answers anonymously, so for now the clickers will have to do. I think the two have different purposes, though the methods of gathering data have some slight similarities. testing students & gathering statistical data are two different tasks, even if the clickers could work as a substitute for some things (but it wouldn't be anonymous at all that way, which may affect the accuracy of the data collected).
I haven't used a clicker for a while, but I definitely hated having to buy an extra gadget just to do attendance. But it's still unsafe to assume, as you've demonstrated, that everyone has text messaging. Maybe it will be more common in a few years, though.
ReplyDeleteHey Mike, yeah I really do think that integrating techology into the classroom can make the class a lot more interactive and engaging. Too bad I missed out on it, though, since my phone doesn't have text messaging on it right now!
ReplyDeleteI missed the class where you guys did this but that sounds really cool! I think we will continue to see more and more uses for technology in the classroom. I am excited to hear what our guest speaker has to say about technology and curriculum since she is a specialist at a local school district.
